MICROBLADING HEALING & AFTERCARE

What Happens After your Brow Appointment
You love your fresh brows on day one. Then, a few days later, they look darker, a little tight, maybe even flaky. This is all part of the microblading healing process, not a sign that something has gone wrong.

Microblading is a form of cosmetic tattooing. Your skin needs time to repair and settle the pigment under a new, protective layer. How you care for your brows during that time is what protects the shape and colour you came for, along with those crisp hair strokes.
I give every client clear, written eyebrow microblading aftercare instructions. On this page, I explain the full healing process for microblading so you know exactly what to expect.
Why Healing Looks the Way it Does
You are seeing:
- Darker brows in the first few days
- Mild redness or swelling
- Tightness, scabbing, or flaking
- A “too light” or patchy phase
Under the surface, tiny channels created during microblading are closing and rebuilding. Your skin is working to protect itself, then slowly revealing the true healed colour underneath.
Microblading aftercare is about supporting that repair: keeping the area clean, not over-hydrated, and never picking. The right aftercare of microblading means fewer touch-ups and better colour retention, with softer healed strokes.
Microblading Healing Stages: How it Unfolds
Everyone heals a little differently, but the eyebrow microblading healing process tends to follow a clear pattern. Use these stages to recognise where you are and what is normal for your skin.
Fresh, Crisp, and Bold
At first, your brows look defined and sharper than your final result will be. The area may feel a bit tender or warm, like a mild sunburn.
I clean your brows at the end of your appointment, then apply a thin layer of healing ointment if your skin type calls for it. You go home with cotton pads and clear aftercare instructions.
Aftercare at this point:
- Blot gently with a clean tissue if you see any lymph (clear fluid)
- Keep your brows dry except for the specific cleansing I explain
- Do not touch with unwashed hands
Darker and Tight
As the pigment sits in the skin, brows often look darker for a while. You may notice mild swelling or tightness.
This is normal. It is not your final colour.
Aftercare for microblading in this stage:
- Continue the gentle cleanse steps I showed you
- Pat dry, do not rub
- Avoid heavy sweating, steam, and long showers on your face
Scabbing and Flaking
This is when most people start to worry. The scabbing part of the microblading healing process can look uneven or flaky.
You might see small, thin scabs or a light veil of dry skin over the strokes. As they lift, the colour underneath looks quite light.
This is the most important eyebrow microblading aftercare rule: No picking. No peeling. No brushing.
Let the flakes fall away on their own. Picking can pull pigment out with the skin and leave gaps. In some cases it can even cause scarring.
The “where Did My Brows Go?” Phase
Many people hit this phase and think the pigment has disappeared. The colour can look too light or cool, with areas that seem uneven.
The healing process for microblading includes a “ghosting” phase. Fresh skin forms over the strokes and makes them look softer and lighter until that new skin settles.
Keep following your aftercare for eyebrow microblading:
- No active skincare on the area (acids, retinol, scrubs)
- No facials, peels, or laser around the brows
- SPF around, not directly over, until I say you are cleared
True Healed Result
As your skin calms, you start to see the real microblading eyebrow healing process pay off. Colour settles and strokes soften, so everything starts to look more natural.
Once your skin is fully healed, we can assess your retention and decide whether a touch-up would complete the look. I plan your follow-up around your unique healing pace.
I always build microblading healing stages into your plan. That way, you are never guessing where you are in the process.
Microblading Aftercare: What to Do (and What to Avoid)
Consistent, simple eyebrow microblading aftercare makes the biggest difference in how your brows heal. Here is the exact approach I will walk you through.
The Essential “do” List
- Keep the area clean with the product and method I show you
- Pat dry gently with a clean tissue, never rub
- Sleep on your back if you can, to avoid pressure on the brows
- Use only the ointment or cream I recommend, in a very thin layer
- Wear a hat outside, and keep SPF around the brow area once cleared
The “avoid” List During Healing
- No makeup directly on the brows
- No swimming, hot tubs, saunas, or steam rooms
- No intense workouts that cause heavy sweating
- No tanning beds or direct sun on the area
- No exfoliating products or active skincare over the brows
- No picking, scratching, or trimming the scabs
These microblading aftercare steps are specific to this treatment, not generic tattoo advice. They are designed to protect each fine hair stroke and your colour.
How Long Does Eyebrow Microblading Take to Heal?
Surface healing happens first. The skin closes and flakes fall away. Full internal repair, with colour settled, takes longer.
A few things can affect your microblading eyebrow healing process:
- Skin type (oilier skin often has softer healed strokes)
- Age and general health
- How closely you follow your aftercare for microblading
- Medications or skincare that affect cell turnover
This is why I always ask about your skincare and lifestyle during your consultation. Your plan and your expected healing timeline are based on your actual skin, not a template, and your aftercare matches that.

Your Brows by Cher Healing Experience
Book now01PERSONALIZED CONSULT
Before a single stroke, I start with a detailed consult. We talk through your brow history, past tattoos (if any), skin type, and what you are hoping to see in the mirror once everything is healed.
I map your brows and show you possible shapes that suit your features, then explain the full healing process of microblading in simple, honest terms. You see where the stages can look a bit strange, and you know why they happen.
You leave this step already holding your printed and digital microblading aftercare guide.
02YOUR MICROBLADING APPOINTMENT
On treatment day, the space is calm. The pace stays unhurried. You are somewhere private, so you can truly relax.
I numb the area and finish your mapping. Then I create each stroke with careful, feather-light pressure. You will feel some scratching and mild pressure, not deep cutting.
Throughout, I explain what I am doing and how it relates to your eventual eyebrow microblading healing so every step makes sense. You can ask questions at any point.
03IMMEDIATE AFTERCARE SETUP
When your brows are complete, I clean the area and take fresh photos for your file. Then I walk you through your first cleanse so you know exactly how it should feel.
You get:
- Written aftercare of microblading instructions
- A small aftercare kit if your skin type needs it
- My direct contact details if you are unsure about anything while you heal
This is also when I talk you through the microblading healing stages once more. You leave understanding what is normal and what would be a reason to reach out.
04HEALING SUPPORT
You may find it reassuring to check in as you move through the stages. Some people like to send quick photos or messages in the first part of healing.
If you are not sure whether your scabbing looks normal, or if your brows feel dry, you can ask. I would rather you reach out than guess.
If we have a touch-up booked, I will time it around your healing process microblading stage so we are not working on skin that is still repairing.
Why Microblading Healing with Brows by Cher Feels Different
I am not only a cosmetic tattoo artist. I have personally had my own microblading and powder brows done many times since 2007.
I know exactly how the healing process for microblading feels at each stage. I also know how much better the result is when aftercare is clear and realistic.
As a four-time certified artist, I learned colour theory, correction, and camouflage through BioTouch Canada and INK x Meraki, plus bloodborne pathogens and sanitation training. That background shapes how I design your brows and how I guide your healing.
Every client receives:
- Honest prep guidance so your skin is ready before we start
- Clear eyebrow microblading aftercare instructions, not vague do’s and don’ts
- Support during the healing stages, not just a quick “you are fine”
Your part is simple. Show up, follow the plan. Let your skin do the rest.
FAQ: Microblading Healing & Aftercare
Everything you need to know before, during and after your appointment.
How long does microblading take to fully heal?⌄
Surface healing finishes first, with flaking and scabbing resolving as the skin closes. Full eyebrow microblading healing, with colour settled and strokes softened, usually takes longer. Your follow-up is planned once the skin has completed this repair cycle.
Is scabbing normal during the microblading healing process?⌄
Yes, light scabbing or flaking is a normal part of the healing process of microblading. Thin, dry flakes lifting off over the strokes are expected. What is not normal is thick, heavy scabs or any bleeding or yellow discharge. If you see anything worrying, you can contact me so I can guide you.
What should I avoid after my microblading appointment?⌄
You should avoid makeup on the brows, heavy sweating, swimming, saunas, and direct sun while you heal. Do not use exfoliants or active products like acids or retinol on the area. Avoid picking or scratching the scabs, even if they itch. These steps protect your result and are part of the eyebrow microblading aftercare instructions I give you.
Can I wash my face after microblading?⌄
You can wash your face, but you need to keep the brow area as dry as possible and follow the cleanse method I show you. Usually, that means using a gentle cleanser around the brows, then doing a soft, specific brow cleanse with a damp cotton pad. I go over this with you at your appointment, so it is easy to repeat at home.
Why do my brows look so dark, then so light?⌄
In the first few days, pigment oxidizes and brows can look darker than your final result. After scabbing, they often look very light or patchy, which is the “ghosting” phase. As your skin finishes healing, the true colour returns. I explain this in detail so you are not surprised by these microblading healing stages.
What happens if I accidentally pick a scab?⌄
Picking can pull out pigment and leave a lighter spot or uneven stroke. If it happens once, do not panic. Stop touching the area and follow the aftercare for eyebrow microblading closely. If you are worried, you can take a clear photo so we can decide whether it is likely to need a touch-up later.
How do I sleep after my microblading appointment?⌄
It is best to sleep on your back and avoid pressing your brows into the pillow while the area heals. If you are a side sleeper, I suggest a clean towel on your pillow and being mindful of direct pressure on the area. This simple step helps protect both the shape and your microblading healing.
Can I work out during the healing process?⌄
Intense workouts that cause heavy sweating are not recommended while the area is still open and fresh. Sweat can push pigment out and increase the risk of infection. Gentle movement that does not overheat you is usually fine. We can adjust your microblading aftercare based on your normal routine.
Will microblading still heal well on oily skin?⌄
Oily skin can heal with softer, slightly more blurred strokes, but it can still hold pigment well. I adjust my technique and your eyebrow microblading aftercare to suit your skin type. That may mean different products or a closer focus on keeping the area clean and not over-hydrated while you heal.
When should I book my touch-up?⌄
Most clients benefit from a touch-up once the skin has completely healed from their first microblading session. By that point, the healing process microblading phase is complete and we can see exactly where extra pigment would perfect your brows. We can pre-book this at your initial appointment or decide once I see how your brows have healed.
Your brows do not just need a skilled artist on the day. They need clear, simple support while they heal.
When you are ready to begin, I am here with both.
