Why does microblading prep matter so much?

Most people focus on the “after” photos and forget that great brows actually start days before the first stroke of pigment touches your skin. Microblading prep is the quiet part that makes everything else smoother: the mapping, the colour, the healing, and how long your new brows last.

If you are planning your first appointment, or your first one in years, this is the checklist I share with my own Calgary clients before I arrive at your appointment.

Microblading prep matters because what you do in the time before your appointment affects how evenly the pigment heals and how much you bleed. Those two things decide how crisp the strokes stay over time. The healthier and calmer your skin is on treatment day, the more control I have over shape and colour.

If the skin is irritated or over exfoliated, or loaded with strong active ingredients, it can be harder to implant pigment at the right depth. That can lead to patchy healing or strokes that blur sooner than they should.

Good prep also keeps you more comfortable. Avoiding certain products, medications, and habits reduces sensitivity and helps limit swelling and oozing. Less drama. Better brows.

How Far in Advance Should You Start Preparing for Microblading?

You should start thinking about microblading prep once your appointment is on the calendar, then follow a tighter checklist in the last stretch before treatment day. That sounds like a lot, but most of it is simple: timing your routine appointments, easing off certain skincare, and planning around important events.

Instead of a rigid schedule, I prefer a flexible plan that fits your life. When you book your brows with me, we walk through timing together and adapt it to your skin, your routine, and whether I am coming to a pop-up location or a private space we arrange.

What Should You Avoid Before Microblading?

Before microblading, avoid anything that thins your blood or irritates your skin. Try to minimise anything that increases oil and sweat on your brow area. This gives the pigment the best chance to sit evenly and heal clean.

Common things to avoid:

  • Blood thinning medications or supplements (only with your prescriber’s guidance).
  • Alcohol and recreational drugs.
  • Heavy workouts right before your appointment.
  • Sunburns or tanning on the face.
  • Harsh exfoliants and active ingredients on the brow area.

If you are taking prescription medications, always clear any changes with your doctor or pharmacist first. At your consultation, I review your health form, talk through your current routine, and let you know what is safe to continue and what needs a pause.

How Should You Time Facials, Waxing, and Botox Before Microblading?

If you love your regular skin and brow appointments, you can keep them. You just need to time them thoughtfully around your microblading.

Use this as a simple guide:

  • Facials and light peels: Give your skin time to settle so the barrier is intact before any tattoo work.
  • Strong peels or microneedling: Leave a clear gap so the skin can recover fully.
  • Brow waxing, threading, or tweezing: Do this a little before your appointment so the skin is not raw, and I can still see the natural growth pattern.
  • Botox or filler near the brows: Make sure your features are settled ahead of your mapping appointment so I can design around your true expression.

If you are unsure which service should come first, ask at your consultation. You can also reach out through my contact page. It is much easier to plan the order now than to correct shape or colour later.

What Skincare Changes Should You Make Before Microblading?

Before microblading, you want your brow area to be calm, hydrated, and free of strong actives. Aggressive skincare makes the top layers of skin thinner. That can cause more bleeding and faster pigment fading. It also raises the risk of blurring.

For the days leading up to your appointment, on the brow area only:

  • Avoid retinol or retinoids.
  • Avoid AHA/BHA exfoliating acids and strong scrubs.
  • Pause vitamin C serums if they tend to sting.
  • Skip at home dermaplaning or microderm tools.
  • Use a gentle, fragrance free cleanser and a simple moisturizer.

If you use acne treatments or anti aging products on the forehead, or prescription creams, bring a list or photo of the products to your appointment. I can help you decide what to pause and when to restart them after your brows are healed.

Can You Drink Coffee or Alcohol Before your Microblading Appointment?

It is best to avoid alcohol in the lead up to microblading and to limit caffeine on the day itself. Both can increase blood flow to the skin, which means more oozing and swelling while I work.

A tiny bit of caffeine is usually fine if skipping it would give you a headache, but try to keep it lighter than your usual routine. Arrive hydrated and eat a normal meal beforehand. Skip the pre appointment cocktails. Your brows will thank you.

During your mobile appointment in Calgary, I set up, map, and tattoo on location. Feeling steady and comfortable helps your body stay relaxed through the whole session.

How Should You Prepare your Skin and Brows the Night Before?

The night before your appointment, keep things simple. This is not the time to try a new mask or scrub.

Do:

  • Wash your face with a gentle cleanser.
  • Moisturize your skin, including the forehead (but avoid heavy, oily balms on the brows).
  • Get a regular night’s sleep so your skin is less puffy and reactive in the morning.
  • Lay out anything you need for your appointment, especially if I am coming to you: a space with good lighting, an outlet, and a comfortable spot for you to lie down.

Do not:

  • Apply fake tan to the face.
  • Use strong exfoliating products.
  • Over pluck or “fix” your brows. I need to see your natural growth to design the right shape.

If you wake up with any irritation, rash, or new skin concern on the brow area, reach out before your appointment time. Sometimes the safest choice is to reschedule.

What Should You Expect on the Day of your Microblading Appointment?

On the day, arrive with clean skin and no makeup on the brow area, or be ready at the agreed location if I am travelling to you. Avoid heavy creams on your forehead. I do every mapping and colour decision with your natural colouring and features visible.

Here is how a typical Brows by Cher microblading appointment flows:

1. Consult and medical history: We review your forms, your past brow history, and your goals. If you are unsure whether microblading, powder, or combination brows are right for you, I explain the differences and guide you to the best option. 2. Brow mapping and design: I measure, mark, and sketch your new shape using your bone structure, eye position, and natural hair growth as my guide. You see and approve the outline before any tattooing begins. 3. Colour selection: Together we choose a pigment that works with your skin undertone and brow goals, whether that is soft and natural or more defined. 4. Numbing and tattooing: A topical numbing cream is applied, then I begin creating fine hair like strokes with a manual tool. Throughout, I check in on your comfort, adjusting as needed. 5. Aftercare review: At the end, I walk you through your healing stages and aftercare. You leave with clear written instructions so you know exactly what to do in the days ahead.

How is Microblading Prep Different for Colour Correction or Previous Brow Tattoos?

If you already have brow tattoo work, your microblading prep is similar, but the assessment is not. Old pigment and scar tissue all change how I work. Previous shape choices matter too.

Before booking correction or camouflage:

  • Take clear, makeup free photos of your brows in natural light.
  • Note when your last brow tattoo or touch up was done.
  • Be honest about any past removal, lasers, or saline treatments.

At your consultation, I assess whether correction microblading, powder brows, or full camouflage is safest. In some cases, I recommend fading with a laser specialist in Calgary before we add any more pigment. My correction and camouflage services are designed to restore balance and softness to brows that have gone too dark, too grey, or too warm.

How Should You Prepare the Space for a Mobile Microblading Appointment?

For mobile microblading in Calgary, a little space prep goes a long way to keeping your appointment smooth and relaxing. I bring the bed, lighting, pigments, and sterile tools. You provide a calm spot to set up.

Ideal space:

  • A room with enough floor area for a treatment bed and my gear.
  • An accessible power outlet for lighting.
  • Good ambient light if possible, or at least not a dark basement.
  • A quiet environment where you can lie still for a few hours.

Pet owners: it helps to keep pets in another room while I am working so the setup stays as clean as possible.

If the space has unique challenges, we talk through them in your consultation call and find a setup that works for both of us.

When is the Best Time to Book your Microblading Around Events or Travel?

It is best to book microblading with some breathing room before big events or travel. Anything that involves sun, sweat, or lots of photos deserves extra planning. Your brows go through several healing phases before they settle into their final look.

If you need a perfect, healed result for a wedding or milestone, give yourself time for your initial session and full healing, plus your perfecting session. For a deeper breakdown of what each healing stage looks and feels like, you can refer to my microblading healing timeline blog and plan your dates from there.
