Here is the honest piece. Both are forms of cosmetic brow tattooing. Both can look beautiful or can miss completely; the artist and your skin are what decide that. The real differences sit in the tools and how your skin type behaves over time.
I do not offer nano brows. I focus on microblading, powder ombré, combination brows and correction work. This is the view from the chair: what I actually see in healed results, not what a marketing graphic says.
What Are Microblading and Nano Brows in Simple Terms?
Microblading uses a manual hand tool with a row of tiny pins to create fine hair like strokes in the dermis-layer of the skin. Nano brows use a machine with a single very fine needle to create similar strokes.

On paper, both promise the same thing: crisp strokes that mimic natural brow hairs. In real life, the tool changes how deep the pigment goes and how forgiving the treatment is on different skin types.
With microblading, I control every stroke by hand. Pressure, direction, length and spacing sit in my fingers. With nano, the machine adds constant movement and speed, which can be a good or bad thing depending on the artist’s training and the client’s skin.

With microblading, a handheld blade deposits pigment very shallowly in tiny channels that look like hairs. When done correctly, the result heals soft. On dry or normal skin, the strokes can stay quite crisp.
With nano brows, a digital machine and a single needle tap pigment into the skin in a series of tiny points that form a line. This can create beautiful, fine strokes on the right skin. It can also blur or look “dusty” if the skin is thin or reactive.
From what I see in correction work, machine strokes often sit a little deeper. That can mean more stubborn colour that hangs on, and it can also mean more ashy or grey healing if colour selection and technique were not right.
Which is Better for Oily or Textured Skin: Microblading or Nano?
Neither microblading nor nano brows love very oily or very textured skin. Oily skin wants to spread pigment, no matter which tool you use.

On balanced or slightly oily skin, a skilled artist can adjust pressure and pattern to get beautiful microbladed strokes. On very oily, porous or acne prone brows, both microbladed and nano strokes tend to blur faster and can heal more powdery.
This is where I often recommend powder ombré or combination brows instead of pure strokes. A soft shaded base with a few strokes on top can look more even and age more gracefully on oily or mature skin than trying to force ultra crisp lines that the skin simply will not hold.

Microblading can blend beautifully with your existing brow hairs when the pattern follows your true growth and the colour match is exact. The danger is over crowding strokes, going too dark, or placing them in areas where brows do not naturally grow. That is when brows look “drawn on”.
Nano brows can sometimes achieve even finer strokes on close inspection. On camera or from a normal talking distance, most people cannot see a clear difference between a well done microbladed brow and a well done nano brow. What they do notice is the overall shape and how the brows sit on the face.
The “most natural” option is the one that respects your bone structure, natural hair pattern and skin, not the tool on the tray.
Does Nano Hurt Less Than Microblading?
Pain is one of the first questions I hear about any brow tattoo. Many people are surprised by how manageable it is.
Both microblading and nano brows are done with numbing. A topical anesthetic cream is applied and given time to work before the first stroke. Most people describe the feeling as light scratching or pressure, not sharp pain.
Some find the tapping vibration of a machine more distracting than the glide of a manual blade. Others barely notice it. In my microblading and powder work, I move at a steady, unhurried pace and keep checking in. Comfort is part of the experience, not an afterthought.
Which Lasts Longer: Microblading vs Nano Brows?
Longevity depends more on your skin, lifestyle and aftercare than on whether the artist used a blade or a needle.
Stroke based work like microblading or nano brows tends to soften faster than fully shaded powder brows. That is because there is less pigment in the skin and every stroke is a crisp line, so any blurring or fading is more obvious.
Some artists claim nano brows always last longer because the machine can place pigment more evenly. In reality, you can see beautiful microblading that still looks soft and flattering over time, and you can see machine work that has turned cool or patchy in the same window.
What matters for lasting, flattering brows is:
- correct depth so the pigment does not sit too deep
- high quality pigments that are less likely to heal in odd tones
- following your aftercare and doing touch ups at the right time
At Brows by Cher, microblading is planned with maintenance in mind, not as a one time, “set and forget” brow.
Are Nano Brows Safer or Less Damaging Than Microblading?
The idea that nano brows are always “safer” or “less traumatic” is one of the biggest myths online. Any tattooing technique can cause trauma when done too deep or too often, or on the wrong skin.
A well trained artist using sterile, single use tools and correct depth will respect your skin, whether the tool is manual or machine. A poorly trained artist can overwork skin with either method.
Where safety really lives is in:
- bloodborne pathogens training
- strict hygiene standards
- disposable tool use
- realistic spacing between sessions so the skin heals properly
My own background includes bloodborne pathogens and Barbicide infection control training, and every needle and blade I use is single use and opened in front of you. Tool choice is never a shortcut for proper safety.

Right now, I choose to focus on the techniques I believe give the most consistent, flattering healed results across many skin types: microblading, powder ombré, combination brows and correction and camouflage.
Nano can be the right choice for some people, in the hands of a specialist who does many nano sets a year. It is simply not the core of my practice at this time, and I will not offer a service until I can stand fully behind it with both training and healed results.
If you already have machine done brows that have turned grey, blue or misshapen, my eyebrow correction and camouflage service is often the better next step than adding more strokes of any kind.
How Do I Choose Between Microblading, Nano, Powder and Combination Brows?
The most important decision is not “microblading vs nano brows”. It is “what will heal best on my skin and fit my day to day life”.
Here is how I think through that choice with you:
- Your skin type and age. Dry, balanced, oily, thin, textured or mature skin all behave differently with strokes and shading.
- Your existing brows. Lots of hair, sparse tails, old faded tattoo underneath, scars: all change the plan.
- Your style. Soft and subtle, or glam even with no makeup. How you want to feel when you wake up.
- Your long term comfort. How you feel about gradual fading, small colour shifts, and maintenance visits.
If you arrive asking for “hair strokes only”, we may still decide together that microblading with a soft powder ombré blend, or even full powder, will give you the most even, “always done” brow.
The only way to make that call safely is in person, with your brows in front of me and your history on the table.
When is Microblading Not the Right Choice?
Microblading is not my first recommendation if:
- your skin is very oily and porous
- you have strong, visible texture or raised scars through the brow
- your previous brow tattoo is still dark and dense
- you want a very bold, filled in makeup look all the time
In those cases, powder ombré, combination brows, or a focus on correction first are usually kinder to your skin. They also tend to be more predictable in how they age.
