STRAIGHT BROWS: THE LOOK AND HOW IT’S DONE

Straight eyebrows are brows with a low, soft arch that sits further out toward the tail instead of peaking high above the iris. The top line looks almost level, with just a gentle lift at the end rather than a sharp triangle arch.

On the face, straight brows usually:

• Make the eyes look wider and more open
• Give a softer, more relaxed expression
• Shorten a long forehead or balance a very high arch

The key is “almost” straight. True ruler-straight brows can look flat or tense in real life, especially when you move. A well-designed straight brow keeps a tiny bit of lift so your expression still has life.

Straight brows are popular because they read modern, soft, and understated. They also photograph well from almost every angle.

Most of the inspiration photos you see of straight brows:

• Smooth out a naturally high arch so the brow looks calmer
• Take bulk out of the front half of the brow, then extend the tail
• Keep the lower line very clean to create that “lifted but not surprised” look

For many people, straight brows hit that balance: effortless for every day, sculpted enough for a night out. They also pair well with many eye shapes. That is a big part of the appeal.

Straight brows do not suit every face or every natural growth pattern. They tend to work best on:

• Longer faces that need a bit of horizontal balance
• Very round faces where a softer, straighter top line feels more modern than a high, rounded arch
• Eyes that naturally sit slightly angled or upturned at the outer corners

I am more cautious with straight brows if:

• Your natural brow hair grows very high and arched
• You already have a low brow bone and hooded lid
• You have very little brow hair and a lot of old tattoo or scarring

On those faces, forcing a totally straight brow can make the upper lid feel heavy, or exaggerate asymmetry. In those cases, I keep more of a soft arch and borrow just a little of the straight-brow mood instead of copying your screenshot exactly.

This is where proper brow mapping and a real consultation matter more than the trend.

To get straight brows without shaving them off, you build the illusion of straightness with shape and shading, not just with tweezers.

The basics:

• Clean up only underneath the highest part of your arch, not the whole lower line
• Grow in the front and the tail where you may have over-plucked
• Use makeup or semi-permanent brow tattooing to fill in a straighter top edge

When I design a straight brow, I start with your natural brow. I map where your brow should start, where a subtle arch actually flatters your eye, and where that straighter top line can sit without cutting into your expression.

The less hair we remove, the softer and more natural the result will be, both in makeup and in tattoo form.

Microblading can create a soft, straight brow on the right canvas. It works best for straight brows if:

• You already have medium to full natural hair
• Your old arch is not extremely high
• Your skin is not very oily or very thin

Microblading uses fine hair strokes to fill gaps and redirect your shape. For a straight brow, I use those strokes to:

• Add fullness just above the existing arch to lower it visually
• Fill in the tail so the brow can extend more horizontally
• Break up any harsh angles from previous shaping

If your goal is straight brows and you are starting with a thinner or more sparse brow, I often steer you toward powder ombré instead. It gives more control over that clean, straight top line.

For this hybrid look, I often recommend combination brows. They blend microbladed hair strokes with soft shading, so you get:

• A straighter overall shape

You can often soften a high arch into a straighter brow, even if you have old brow tattoo. The question is how much we can safely move and what will still look believable on your face.

With existing brows, I look at:

• Where your natural hair still grows
• How much room we have above and below the current brow

Sometimes, correction and camouflage can blur parts of an old, very arched brow so we can redraw a softer, straighter line on top. Other times, I will suggest removal with a trusted Calgary provider first, then bring you back to me for reshaping once the area has lightened.

The goal is always the same: a straight brow that looks like it could have grown there, not a tattoo fighting your bone structure.
